Dardanus (city)
Dardanus was an ancient city in the Troad.〔("Dardanus" in William Smith, ''Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography'' (1854) )〕 It was sometimes called Dardania, a term used also for the district around it.〔 Pliny the Elder called it Dardanium.〔(Pliny the Elder, ''Natural History", 5.33 )〕

At the time of the geographer Strabo, the city of Dardanus stood one mile south of the headland of Dardanis, the point at which the Hellespont, the strait now called, after the name of the city, the Dardanelles, begins to narrow.〔〔("Dardanis" in Harry Thurston Peck, ''Harpers Dictionary of Classical Antiquities'' (1898) )〕〔(John Lemprière, ''A Classical Dictionary'' (1825), p. 227 )〕 Abydos lay about 70 stadia (14 kilometres) to the north and Rhoeteum about the same distance to the south.〔
